Reports coming from San Francisco, California, AMD held a special event Next Horizon where they announced the newest additions to the EPYC processors and Radeon Instinct family of compute products.

AMD has officially confirmed that their 7nm Zen 2 EPYC processors will offer up to 64 cores and 128 threads per CPU socket, delivering a 2x increase in server density over their 1st Generation EPYC processors.  Zen 2 will be socket compatible with their existing EPYC CPU platform.

Setting up AMD to capture market share from Intel in the high-end data center market. AMD has claimed that their 2nd Generation EPYC processors will offer a performance increase of around 2x when compared to their first generation offerings which was expected. AMD plans to deliver a 2x improvement in performance per socket and up to a 4x increase in floating point performance per socket.

AMD will be launching Radeon Instinct MI60 based on 7nm, a Hardware Virtualized GPU, and Radeon Instinct M150 are the first GPUs in the world that are based on the advanced 7nm FinFET process technology.

The MI60 contains 13.2 billion transistors on a package size of 331.46mm2, while the previous generation Radeon Instinct™ MI25 had 12.5 billion transistors on a package size of 494.8mm2  – a 58% improvement in number of transistors per mm. They have made  numerous improvements on these new products including optimized deep learning operations. According to the AMD The MI60 and MI50 now support INT8 and INT4 operations, delivering up to a whopping 118 TFLOPS of INT4 peak performance on the MI60. More details available here.

AMD also confirms Zen 3 and ZEN 4 in horizon event which are possibly a refresh ZEN 2 with more efficiency and increased core-count/core clocks and traditional 15%~10% IPC Boost. AMD is betting big on 7nm. At its event AMD implied that the first CPU based on its Zen 3 micro architecture will ship in 2020, so it is natural to expect Zen 4 to reach actual products in 2021 or later.
